As I write this, I can hear a cardinal trilling in the backyard. I don’t have to look out the open window to confirm the source of the sounds that come through it; I’ve come to recognize the songs and their singers. I know it’s the mourning dove whose cooing wakes me in the morning and the sparrow whose repetitive chirps complete the sunrise chorus.

Watching birds perched on a branch or visiting a feeder imparts a certain connection to nature that little else does, and, for me at least, listening to their melodies alleviates stress.

A prosecutor says a man who evaded arrest for more than 12 years after being accused of fatally shooting his two teenage daughters in a taxi parked near a Dallas-area hotel was “obsessed with possession and control.” Yaser Said is on trial for capital murder in the shooting deaths of 18-year-old Amina Said and 17-year-old Sarah Said on New Year’s Day in 2008. Said has pleaded not guilty. Prosecutor Lauren Black said during opening statements Tuesday that Said controlled what his daughters did, who they were friends with, and if and whom they could date. Said wrote in a letter to the judge overseeing the case that he wasn't happy with his kids’ “dating activity” but denied killing his daughters.

The man who initiated the neighborhood chase that resulted in the fatal shooting of Ahmaud Arbery is asking a federal judge to show leniency when he's sentenced for a federal hate crime conviction. Greg McMichael's defense attorney says his client should be spared a life sentence, though he has already been sentenced to life without parole on a separate murder conviction. He also asks that McMichael be transferred to a federal prison, allowing him to bypass serving time in a Georgia state prison. McMichael, his adult son and their neighbor are all scheduled for sentencing Monday. Arbery's family has opposed letting the men go straight to federal prison, saying time served in state prison would be tougher.

The Arizona Cardinals have activated receiver Marquise Brown from the non-football injury list. Brown was acquired in a draft-day trade with the Baltimore Ravens, giving the Cardinals a receiver who caught 91 passes for 1,007 yards and six touchdowns last season. Coach Kliff Kingsbury said Brown suffered a minor hamstring injury before camp started while working out on his own. The 25-year-old is expected to have a big role in Arizona’s offense, particularly early in the season when three-time All-Pro DeAndre Hopkins is out for the first six games. Hopkins was suspended in May for violating the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancers.

The WNBA playoff picture is still unclear with two weeks left in the regular season. Five teams have clinched postseason berths and only three games separating Chicago, Las Vegas and Connecticut at the top of the standings. Seattle and Washington also have earned a spot in the postseason and are tied for fourth and fifth. There are still six teams vying for the final three spots, setting up what should be an exciting finish to the regular season. Each of those six teams has at least one game left against the other teams in the group.

President Joe Biden’s “loose cough” has returned as he faces a rebound case of COVID-19, his doctor said Tuesday, though he “continues to feel well.” White House physician Kevin O’Connor provided the update on the president’s condition as he continues to test positive for the virus,. He said Biden “remains fever-free,” and that his temperature, pulse, blood pressure, respiratory rate and oxygen saturation “remain entirely normal.” Still, Biden is required to remain in isolation through at least Thursday under Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines — and perhaps longer under tougher White House protocols if he continues to test positive.

Fire crews battling a western Nebraska wildfire that has destroyed some homes are looking to the skies with hope and trepidation as weather forecasters warn of thunderstorms. The National Weather Service forecast a 50% chance of thunderstorms producing heavy rains Tuesday afternoon into the night. A storm could help douse the Carter Canyon Fire south of Gering that has scorched about 25 square miles of mostly grass and timberland. The fire has destroyed three homes and damaged several more in the Carter Canyon community that was evacuated Sunday. While fire crews would welcome rain, they fear lightning strikes that could spark new fires in the tinder-dry region. Firefighters had the fire about 30% contained going into Tuesday.

Caruso is a billionaire developer and Republican-turned-Democrat who is running as an outsider. Biden and Harris called Bass a friend and praised her strategies to deal with a homeless crisis and rising crime.
