Victors' Thomas to compete in two sports' postseasons in six-day span

Tara Thomas said she plans to come out swinging in the days ahead.

Although the Villa Maria senior didn’t specify if that meant in tennis or golf, her pun was appropriate for both.

Thomas is about to experience a unique scenario for a high school athlete. She’s expected to participate in postseason events for two PIAA sports over a week's span.

It's a week that starts Wednesday, when District 10 holds its girls team tennis finals at Villa’s new outdoor facility. McDowell (9-1) and Fairview (9-5) will vie for the Class 3A title at 1 p.m., followed by Hickory (13-1) and the host Victors (11-0) in the 2A championship at 3.

The duals were supposed to take place Thursday, but tournament director Andy Findlay rescheduled them for Wednesday because of the weather forecast.

Class 3A: McDowell vs. Fairview, 1 p.m.

Class 2A: Villa Maria vs. Hickory, 3 p.m.

Thomas is then scheduled back on her home courts for Saturday’s main portion of the district’s girls singles tennis tournament. The three-time PIAA 2A doubles gold medalist told the Erie Times-News she plans to compete in singles for her final postseason as a Victor.

If Thomas advances to the district’s small-school final, she would compete in that event Tuesday.

In between, though, Thomas would travel to York to compete in the PIAA 2A girls golf tournament. She received the last of the district’s three qualifying berths for Monday’s 18-hole event at Heritage Hills Golf Resort.

Thomas shoehorned tennis and golf workouts into her daily schedule for nearly two weeks. That schedule became tighter as daylight hours dwindled.

If it sounds frantic, it was according to Thomas.

“It was a pretty crazy schedule if you looked at it,” she said. “Other girls were only practicing one sport, where I was working out for two and I couldn't afford to miss a day. I definitely tired myself out sometimes, but it was also worth it.”

If Thomas prevails as the district’s 2A singles champ, she could tack on more history to the PIAA lore attained over her first three seasons with the Victors.

Villa graduate Sarah DeMarco, a University of Dayton (Ohio) recruit, and Thomas became the first female duo who won three state doubles tournaments.

If Thomas wins the PIAA’s 2A singles final come Oct. 31 at Hershey Racquet Club, she would be the district's first tennis player, male or female, to claim singles and doubles titles.

“It would be an unreal moment to be a trailblazer like that,” Thomas said, "and coming from a tennis family, I’d love to cap my senior year like that.”

All district play is scheduled on Villa's courts. Past D-10 tournaments were held indoors for decades at Westwood Racquet Club and Pennbriar Athletic Club, but this season’s competitions were moved outdoors because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

COVID-19 even added drama to Wednesday's 3A team final beyond McDowell’s bid to complete a 3-0 season sweep of Fairview.

Although the Trojans won 3-2 and 4-1 duals over the Tigers last month, they’ll arrive at Villa’s campus having only formally practiced one day.

Millcreek School District officials permitted most of the school’s athletic programs to resume training and play on Tuesday after being shuttered for nearly two weeks because of an outbreak of COVID-19 cases.

McDowell’s girls tennis team last played Sept. 29, when it defeated Fairview for the second time.

“(The break) was tough because we were playing pretty good tennis going into last week,” Trojans coach Richard Beck said. “We had two (duals) cancelled, which included (one against) Villa. Those were the kind of matches the girls needed this time of the year. But we’ll try to do what we can.”

Wednesday's winners will qualify for state competition in brackets that also were reduced because of the pandemic.

The McDowell-Fairview victor will next travel to District 9 DuBois. That PIAA 3A subregion final is scheduled for Oct. 22.

Villa or Hickory will draw the District 5 or 9 top seed in a state 2A quarterfinal. That dual is scheduled for Oct. 28 at Westwood.

Unlike past PIAA team tennis tournaments, only the semifinal and championship duals will take place at Hershey.
