Over the years, we've stepped inside some seriously unique homes that made us do a double-take. And it turns out that there's no shortage of surreal estate around the world. From a mansion with its very own neon nightclub to a home kitted out with iconic pop culture memorabilia, these weird and wonderful properties have to be seen to be believed. Step this way and click or scroll on as we explore the strangest spreads on the market right now...

These two bold black houses appear fairly ordinary on first glance, but in fact they're harbouring some seriously cool— but unexpected— interiors. Enough to make you want to turn to the dark side, you won't quite believe your eyes once we step inside, but fair warning, those afraid of horror movies might not like what they see...

That's right, everyday is Halloween in this compound! The dual properties were built in 1941 and can be found side by side in Big Bear Lake, California. They offer a total of just 848 square feet of inside space, but every single room has been meticulously designed to capture some of the biggest movies and TV shows from pop culture, including A Nightmare on Elm Street, The Evil Dead and Scream. There are arcade machines, neon signs, posters, dolls and collectibles everywhere you look.

Each unit has just one bedroom, one bathroom, a kitchen and lounge. One of the coolest spaces is this living room, which has been designed to mimic the Byers’ house from the hit Netflix series, Stranger Things. From the yellow wallpaper to the old throw and the letters strung up above the couch, the space is an impressive shrine to the cult show.

This bedroom is bound to fill you with nostalgia. The eye-watering 80s room looks like it might have been plucked from the set of Saved by the Bell. We love its vibrant paintwork, dazzling bedding and kitsch accessories. Each unit has been meticulously upgraded too, with new kitchens, bathrooms, flooring, lighting, doors and hardware, as well as retro stoves to make you feel like you've stepped back in time. On the market with RE/MAX for £342,900 ($450k), these unique pads are hard to ignore.

We all have a movie that we can’t get enough of, but would you ever dedicate your entire house to it? Well, that’s exactly what the owners of this unassuming bungalow in Hillsborough County, Florida, have done— and you won’t quite believe the lengths they’ve gone to when it comes to bringing their favourite film to life. The home’s front yard might just give you a clue as to which iconic 90s movie this property is devoted to…

Step through the front door and you’ll find a shrine to the Tim Burton classic, Edward Scissorhands, which featured Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder. Spanning 1,432 square feet, the single-storey dwelling is overflowing with movie memorabilia, artwork, topiary statues, cardboard cut-outs of Edward himself and even oversized scissors. The movie was actually filmed on this very cul-de-sac and the house itself was used as the set for the Boggs' home, which makes the interior a little more understandable.

The three-bedroom, two-bathroom shrine home features an open-plan living room, dining space and kitchen that comes kitted out with a life-size Edward doll, which is more than a little nightmarish. Aside from the obvious film décor, the home also boasts plenty of 80s and 90s design details and bold colours, just like the film itself. Strangely, the owners have kept all of the bedrooms and bathrooms fairly ordinary— perhaps sleeping in an Edward Scissorhands-themed space caused sleepless nights?

Outside, the surreal aesthetic continues. Filled with handmade pallet furniture, colourful decorations and cardboard characters, the backyard certainly has personality. What’s more, the house is located in the community of Carpenter's Run, which offers a clubhouse, pool and tennis courts that the new owner can enjoy. Even better, all of the Edward Scissorhands memorabilia is included in the sale. If you’ve got £535,000 ($700k), then this iconic property could soon be yours.

When this mummified mansion landed on the Australian real estate market in February 2022, it immediately went viral, and not simply because of its unique, rotund exterior. Positioned in Victoria Park, an inner suburb of the city of Perth, the historic home features one of the wildest interiors we've ever seen!

The time-warp home was custom-built by a prominent Italian family in the mid-1970s and thanks to its characterful interior, it has been listed on Victoria Park’s Municipal Heritage Inventory list. A set of bright red front doors open up to a dramatic entrance foyer, complete with a bejeweled Cinderella staircase, mirrored columns and Venetian glass chandeliers— not to mention one seriously loud carpet.

The 7,760-square-foot mansion comes complete with three bedrooms, four bathrooms and endless living spaces, all brimming with astounding décor that hasn't been touched since the home was built some 50 years ago. There's a huge, colourful kitchen with a dazzling tiled floor, stained-glass elements designed to mimic the Italian flag, original counters and cabinets and classic 70s mustard curtains!

Elsewhere, you'll find a gorgeous second-floor skylight, which adorns the top of the staircase, plus ornate cornicing, Italian ceramic tiles, marble verandas and blue and gold bathrooms. There's even a religious monument in the backyard! Listed with Professionals Belmont for around £790,600 ($1m), or just under AUD$1.4 million, this is one standout piece of real estate.

We know what you're thinking— there's nothing weird or wild about this unassuming bungalow in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Well, from the outside you could be deceived into believing this family home is pretty ordinary, but you'd be entirely wrong...

Step inside and the 5,642-square-foot home reveals its hidden secrets. Every single room is decked out with incredible vintage fixtures, from terrazzo surfaces to 10-karat-gold accents, shag pile carpets of unexpected shades and furniture that looks like it belongs in a museum. Clearly there's nothing normal about this unique property.

An open entryway leads into an all-green living room, a dining room, a maple and mahogany kitchen with sparkling countertops, three bedrooms and two bathrooms. Key design touches include the home’s striking chandeliers, designer fabric wall coverings, bevelled glass French doors and gold-plated crown mouldings. There's even an Oval Office-style workspace that looks like it might have once belonged to former president, Richard Nixon.

Yet the master bedroom definitely wins the award for being the most unusual space in the house. The room is overflowing with luxurious touches and bling, benefitting from a huge wood bed, a mirrored ceiling, wall-to-wall green panelling and an open bathroom, complete with a sunken gold tub, a black marble shower, a dressing room and gold-plated accessories. It's really no wonder that this home is currently up for grabs for a cool £990,000 ($1.3m).

Offering an altogether different way of living, this structure in Vaxholm is as historic and unusual as it is beautiful. Nestled on the outskirts of Stockholm, Sweden, the original water tower was constructed in 1923 and served the local community for many years, before it was converted into a distinctive family home about 20 years ago. The quirky residence is now spread over four of the building's seven storeys.

The rotund residence is defined by curved walls, round rooms and period features, such as arched windows, soaring ceilings, exposed brickwork, portholes and rustic timber beams. The interior comprises a chic kitchen, two drawing rooms, a music room, an office, four bedrooms and four bathrooms, making it perfect for a family seeking a one-of-a-kind place to call home. There's also an old water tank that's just waiting to be turned into a swimming pool.

There are plenty of exterior balconies too, which allow for unobstructed views across the surrounding scenery. Even better, the still-functional water tower produces surplus power that can help generate an extra annual income, so this property comes with a job thrown in. There's even a standalone 430-square-foot studio apartment that could be rented out to holidaymakers, providing even more income opportunities.

The distinctive dwelling also benefits from its very own Swedish sauna, positioned on the top floor of the tower. Offering unparalleled vistas over the picturesque archipelago landscape, this serene space is sure to entice. Despite its beauty and scale, the home is proving hard to shift. It first hit the real estate market in 2020 and it's still for sale now. Got £1.6 million ($2m) going spare? Then it could soon be yours.

If your budget will allow, then you could get your hands on this replica Wild West town, that looks like it was plucked from a Spaghetti Western. Located close to the town of Saguache, Colorado, the property sits on 320 acres and borders National Forest land, allowing the lucky new owner to truly disconnect from the hustle and bustle. Let's take a closer look...

The faux Wild West town was constructed in 2007 and was inspired by the classic frontier towns that cropped up across America during the Gold Rush. These towns had everything the new arrivals could need and this replica settlement is no different. For starters, the property boasts a beautiful family home known as Ponderosa Lodge, equipped with three bedrooms, three bathrooms, an open-plan living room, kitchen and dining room.

The tiny town even offers an authentic replica inn, which has operated as a real hotel. Spacious and beautiful in equal measure, it has 12 guest bedrooms, each named after a character from the Old West, as well as a stunning entrance hall with a soaring ceiling, stove fireplace and piano— the perfect gathering place for a sing-a-long. But, of course, that isn't all this replicate Western town has to offer...

The estate also has a miniature golf course, a shooting range, an outdoor stage, a dance hall, a divine church, two cabins and a barn that houses a museum of authentic stagecoaches and historical artifacts. Elsewhere there's a faux cowboy saloon with a long bar and a set of wooden swing doors. We can almost hear the sound of tumbleweed rolling down the street outside. Currently on the market for £3.4 million ($4.7m), this listing is a once-in-a-lifetime purchase.

You'd be forgiven for thinking this historic mews house in London, UK, has a traditional interior, when in fact it might just be one of the most unusual properties in the English capital. Located in the heart of sought-after Kensington, the building was likely built in the 18th century to serve as stables for the wealthy family who lived next door, but it was transformed into a gorgeous family home around 2010.

The house was curated by architect Ian Hogarth and sprawls 3,120 square feet across four floors— two of which are below ground. Inside, you’ll find plenty of space for socialising and relaxing, from this unique sunken lounge to the enclosed private garden and a cinema. The entrance boasts a bulletproof mirrored security door too, making the fortress-like home impenetrable.

The four-bedroom house is full of unique surprises— open-plan bathroom, anyone? Aside from this rather bold bathing set-up, the property is also home to an LED-illuminated dancefloor with a DJ booth and a 4kw sound system, a kitchen with an oak-topped island that rolls aside to reveal a hidden stove, and an indoor fish pond.

That's not all, either. There's a spa with a sauna and Jacuzzi, a wine cellar, a gym and a private garden with a cantilevered, light-aggregate dining table and a pergola. The house is also incredibly energy-efficient and generates its own energy from photovoltaic panels. The whole house has an MVHR ventilation system and is heated by air source heat pumps, while evacuated tube collectors on the roof heat the water. How’s that for savvy?

Located in an affluent Las Vegas neighbourhood, this seemingly normal home is hiding a big secret. On the market with Berkshire Hathaway for a cool £4.5 million ($5.9m), the property offers plenty of bang for your buck, because in addition to a large ground-level residence, there's also a second home hidden somewhere inside...

That's right, head into the main house and down into its depths and you'll find a second home, some 26 feet below ground. The subterranean space was created in 1978 for Avon Cosmetics executive, Girard Henderson, amid Cold War tensions. The brilliant bunker comes with every luxury amenity necessary to see out a global disaster in style, including a swimming pool, city and mountain vistas, fake grass and even mood lighting rigged up to simulate daylight, dusk, night and dawn.

The 5,000-square-foot home can be accessed via an elevator and internal staircase and the sale includes both the subterranean structure and the street-level property, offering five bedrooms and six bathrooms in total. Inside, the underground home is just as bonkers as you might imagine. Its incredible vintage interior includes a bar kitted out with neon signs and mid-century modern stools, a candyfloss pink kitchen, a dining room with a silk wallpaper ceiling, and bathrooms decorated with ornamental columns.

Yet it's the underground home's garden that is the most unusual space. The yard offers a 450-square-foot guest house, a spa, waterfalls, fake trees, walls of murals, a dancefloor complete with a disco ball and pole, and even a cityscape with twinkling lights, so that you’ll never miss the real world. How's that for weird and wonderful?

Described by the listing agents, Sotheby’s International Realty, as a “captivating architectural masterpiece”, this special duplex is every bit the ultimate party pad. Located in the heart of Barcelona’s tech and innovation district, the property was once a wine supplier's warehouse and bodega, designed by a world-renowned French architect. Sadly, we don't have any images of the home's exterior, but its wacky interior more than makes up for it.

The former warehouse, which dates back to 1900, spans an incredible 15,962 square feet and every inch has been designed for work, rest and play. Perfect for these modern times, when working from home is more common than ever, the pad has living rooms, work areas and plenty of flexible-use space, too In fact, there’s a huge office area with its own service entrance, which was designed to accommodate up to 10 employees.

Every room is overflowing with glass, metal, wood and lush foliage, creating an indoor tropical paradise in the heart of the city. While the main lounge features its very own swimming pool, unusual sculptures, towering faux bamboo walls and exposed industrial elements decorate many of the other spaces. There are five bedrooms and five bathrooms, as well as a gorgeous rooftop terrace, where you can sunbathe with a view.

Tucked away at the back of the home you’ll also find an enormous workshop, a garage for up to five cars and an incredible underground wine cellar with built-in barrel storage units. Even better, the property is located just two blocks from the beach. If you've fallen in love, and have £5.7 million ($7.4m) going spare, then this wonderful former warehouse could well be within your reach.

Modern and streamlined, there's nothing immediately unusual about this property in Los Angeles, California. But take a closer look at the exterior of the custom-built mansion and you'll notice that it has no windows. Well, there's a good reason for that and all will become clear when we head inside...

On the market with Sotheby's International Realty for a whopping £8.4 million ($11m), the palatial property spans 5,332 square feet across a staggering eight floors. Located above the famous Sunset Strip, the pad boasts some truly eye-catching décor that makes it an entertainer’s dream. For starters, the home's four bedrooms enjoy dreamy landscape vistas, while its six bathrooms come equipped with neon lights and luxurious features that only the super-rich can afford.

Aside from the usual spaces, such as a living room, gourmet kitchen and dining zone, the home also boasts plenty of surprising additions too, including this neon casino, a state-of-the-art screening room, a private gym, a steam room and sauna. There's also a rooftop pool with a Moroccan tent, a dramatic waterfall and a hot tub grotto.

Yet the pièce de resistance has to be the home’s 1,600-square-foot nightclub. The luxurious lounge benefits from a huge dancefloor, neon lights of every shape and colour and, horrifyingly, a stage area with a pole and a double bed. We’ll leave the rest to your imagination. Who said the real estate industry was dull?
